What is Exit Splash you say?  Exit Splash is Dave Guindon’s newest product aimed at the website visitor who is leaving your site without you getting a sale or email address.  It’s along the same lines as his other product, Virtual Smart Agent.  This product brings up a virtual chat agent to interact with the visitor when they try and leave.

What Exit Splash does is simply redirect your visitor to a website or page of your choosing when they try and close the window. It is really very simple and easy to install and use.  You simply put the small file on your server, customize your dialog box, and enter where you want the redirect to go.  Then you copy and paste a few lines of code at the end of the page your visitor may be exiting and BOOM, you’re done!

I’ve not posted for awhile but I’ve been busy!  I’ve been doing a lot more hands-on research on affiliate marketing and have been working on providing benefits for my subscribers. I have much to report about recent launches, including PPC Classroom (which I am a subscriber of).

Today I just wanted to quickly comment about Butterfly Marketing 2.0.  A scam?  This is Mike Filsaime’s “relaunch” of his popular selling product that he released about two years ago.  It originally sold for, and has until now, $1997.  Many people, included many of the “gurus” have purchased this product for the two grand.  Mike, recently put this entire product on disc and paper and offered it for for $29.95, “the cost of shipping”.  The only criteria being that you had to try his newsletter for a month.  If you don’t cancel his newsletter before 30 days passes, you will be billed $39.95 per month recurring for it.

Now on the surface this looks to be pretty straight forward, but I have a couple of problems with the ethics behind what he did.  First of all, I have personally had a VERY difficult time in the past trying to cancel another product of his, before it went to recurring payments (also for his newsletter).

I did order Butterfly Marketing this time and while he does a better job of spelling out how to cancel, I find it funny and frustrating that on the cancelme.com page my subscription doesn’t show up after entering my info, even though it shows my name and knows I have an account.  It just won’t show my subscription, thus allowing me to cancel.  So, I’m going to have to find a toll number to call to cancel in the next week or so.  This may not seem like a big thing but it’s part of the profile that he has created by making it difficult for people to cancel his products, thus ensuring a few more payments are made to him, which he of course won’t refund, because you read the disclosure.

So, back to Butterfly Marketing 2.0….. I have just recently received it and although I did not order the original version, I have found that I have an identical digital version on my computer.  From where, I do not know.  I compared what I have to what I received in the mail and they are identical, except Mike has updated his picture that goes above his signature.  I have read through about a quarter of the 124 pages and can verify that it is the same as what I already had.  In addition to this, I received 10 discs.  They are mostly interviews that Mike has done with people pertaining to the ‘Butterfly Effect’ of this type of marketing.

So I won’t pretend to give you anymore of a review of the product other than to reiterate that it seems to just be an identical relaunch of his previous product, but used in a way to get people to sign up for his $40 per month newsletter.

As to my other issue with the ethics behind this….. I have seen and heard Mike praise and moan and pat himself on the back for the “gamble” that he is taking by “giving away” this information.  He had video of himself just talking about what a sacrifice he is making and that he is spending $17 per package for a total of 10,000 packages.  Then he talks about the almost $200,000 of his own money that he is willing to sacrifice for this and all that he asks for is us to pay the $29.95 cost of shipping.

C’mon!  Does he seriously think that everyone will believe this sob story?  The facts are that he may very well have spent $17 per product to get ready and package.  That, I believe includes the cost of putting them into the flat rate USPS box that they get shipped in.  This flat rate box doesn’t cost anymore than $12.95 to ship, if that much.  So there is already a profit of, 29.95-12.95=hmmmm, that’s funny, it equals $17 which is his stated cost to produce it and get it ready for shipping!!

So, this whole sob story really is a break-even story at worst, not a loss for him.  In the end he WILL get more subscribers for his newsletter and he WILL get some people to pay him that had wanted to cancel but forgot or couldn’t figure out how.  This is a profit center for him and a way to create future payments, build his list and create continuity programs.

Now, I think really it’s a good plan by him for his business, but I don’t like, as mentioned, some of his tactics used in implementing it.  Making it hard to cancel, bemoaning his potential financial losses and completely misrepresenting his shipping costs are ethical issues that I do not condone.

I have reason to believe that Butterfly Marketing is a fine product, but I hope people weren’t convinced to order it because of the above issues.

Now that you’ve got your affiliate link for the product you are going to promote from ClickBank.  Chances are it’s going to pay you 50% or more commission on each sale you make for them.  Pretty good!  Now what?  You need to promote that link and just as important, you need to capture that lead with your newly set up auto-responder.  How do you do that?

There are many ways.  You could just set up an account with Google AdWords and use pay-per-click to drive traffic to the affiliate site that way, but then you aren’t capturing the lead first.

The best way is to buy a domain either something specific to the product or one that would fit mulitple products using directories, like www.fish.com can be used for www.fish.com/goldfish and www.fish.com/bluegills.  You also need to have web hosting.  I’ve discussed how to get these set up in previous posts.

Once you have your domain name, host and affiliate link (from ClickBank) you are set.  Now open up your web authoring program, I previously talked about using NVU.  Open a new, blank page and then go to AWeber and use their tutorial to set up a webform on this NVU page.  Once that is in place, you should put a bit of text on the page to help with SEO.  Do a bit of research on the product, look at their sales page and some others and paraphrase what they have and put some of it on your page above the form.  Don’t go too crazy and make it too long, it’s not a sales page, it’s a landing page.  It’s just enough to wet their appetite for more information, which you will provided to them by sending them to the sales page of the affiliate, AFTER they give you their name and email!

If you want to do even less work, SqueezePage Templates are some great, click and go, fully customizable Landing pages (or squeeze pages) that you can use.  You don’t even have to set up the AWeber form, just copy your code into the template and you’re done! (yes, they have a video showing you how to do it).  Best of all, they are only $10 and you get twenty of them.  They even throw in 10 ‘Thank you’ pages.

Now you’re rolling. You’ve got a landing page set up to capture the lead, before you send them to the affiliate page.  Hopefully, you’ve chosen a good product with a good converting sales page.  The next step is to get traffic to your landing page.

There are thousand of pages on the web explaining ways to do this, but here are the most simple, in a ‘nutshell’.  Use pay-per-click on Google or Yahoo or your favorite search engine.  Set up your free account, write your ad, set your spending and set the link to your landing page.  Now of course you want to keep your spending low enough that in the end you are not spending way more to gather a customer name then you will reap from them later on.  But that’s a whole other topic.

Free ways for you to get people to your landing page are: to visit forums of your topic and leave posts using links to your landing page (per the forums rules) in your signature.  You should also post articles to article directories (like EZineArticles) about your topic.  Writing them yourself is the cheapest (free) way but you can also use other people to write them for you, but that will cost you ($4-8 each) and you probably don’t want to spend that at this point.

Your email signature can also have a link to your landing page.  Or, how about, post a sign at your local store, giving a little ‘teaser’ information and directing them to your landing page as well.  There are almost limitless ways to drive traffic to your page, most do take time and don’t happen overnight, but the rewards can be great.

There you have it.  That’s a kick start to getting yourself going and making some money online.  As always I look forward to your comments and questions!

Are you trying to make money online and not getting anywhere?  Now really, are you TRYING or are you researching, reading, dabbling and looking for quick answers?  Like many of us, the hardest thing to do is start.  You won’t make any real money online unless you start taking the steps that you’ve been reading about, instead of trying to learn everything first.  What you have to do TODAY is “do something”.  It doesn’t have to be perfect, but you need to start taking action rather than waiting for it to happen for you.

What does this mean?  It means taking the first step in the plan that you are most excited about–whatever that may be.  Chances are by now, you’ve read and seen a hundred different systems to make money on the web.  You need to focus on one and do the required activities.

No matter the plan that you follow, you must start building your list.  That means signing up for an auto-responder account.  Yes, that means spending around $20 a month, before you even start getting any checks.  But this is an absolute necessity.  You must start building a list of customers that you can sell to.  If you only drive traffic to your site or an affiliate site and never capture that customer’s email, then you’re just throwing money away.  It’s like driving your car with a hole in your gas tank.  All the money that you spent getting that customer gets burned up at one contact.

If you added them to your list you can keep using that “gas” over and over again.  You can keep building your relationship and keep selling over and over again, which reduces your costs in the long run.

I recommend AWeber as an auto-responder.  It is what I use and seems to be what the majority of serious internet marketers use.  (Another option is GetResponse, but I do not have any experience with them.  I believe that they take second place as far as number of clients using them.)  Signing up is very easy and they have many online tutorials that walk you through everything.  There is a bit of a learning curve and you do have to actually set up all of your auto-responder emails, which can take time.  But once you do it, it is done and you don’t have to do it again.

If you think of all the emails that you get from marketers, they aren’t sitting around writing you personal emails every day.  Chances are that they wrote all those emails months ago and they never even think about them or you personally, even though it seems as if they do.  That’s the point.  It looks personal, but it’s on autopilot.  Another plus is that you can use the same emails for different products that you promote.  Just copy an email from one series and paste it in another and that’s one less that you have to come up with!

Now, if you don’t have a plan to follow, start promoting someone else’s product.  Go sign up at ClickBank (it’s free) and browse through all of the products that they have in their marketplace.  The more research you do the better on the product you are going to promote, but the point is that you won’t build your list and make any money until you start trying to.  You’re going to be pocketing half or more of the price of the product, so it’s a good place to try.

Now you’ve got your affiliate link for the product you are going to promote from ClickBank.  Chances are it’s going to pay you 50% or more commission on each sale you make for them.  Pretty good!  Now what?  You need to promote that link and just as important, you need to capture that lead with your newly set up auto-responder.  How do you do that?  I’ll cover that in the next post…..
